Following this tutorial, I set-up a Nikon D50 I’ve nicked borrowed from a mate and snapped up a few pics to create ‘My First HDR™’. It doesn’t really scream HDR, but it is a single object composition; not much to play with. Besides the fact that I’ve probably done it all wrong, I think I ought to be a bit more adventurous next time.

It’s been roughly four months since this blog launched and after a short-wave of regular posts I abandoned the site altogether in pursuit of work and everyday life, but moreover I just couldn’t think of any real purposeful reasons to blog. Now that I’ve achieved my new year’s goal of gaining employment and settling down, I’ve decided to make use of this site before it goes to waste completely. There’s still plenty more I could be doing to improve this site structurally and content wise. For starters, I’m going to get my Flickr API on; which is something that’s eluded the site from the outset. Iron out some code bugs here and there, and eventually get a more extensive portfolio running.

As for blog content… well this should hopefully get the ball rolling.

I’m sure many can relate to this scenario:

All is calm and peaceful as Timmy happily browses sites of ’suspect legality’ looking for something to entertain, when out of nowhere… “BUUUUZZZZZZZNEEERRRRR!” penetrates his eardrum like unsuspected anal rape. He quickly darts the cursor to kill the heinous virtual inset, but fails to neutralise the unbearable noise with the first few rapid clicks of the mouse button… eventually after a very stressful few seconds, the noise is extinguished by muting the speakers or by successfully zapping the bastard - Ultimately loading the promotional webpage and slipping more change into the owners pocket.

Today, I refused to be like Timmy any longer, after months of Mosquito torture I decided to try and find a solution for myself. This proved to be more difficult than I had first thought, because no single plug-in seemed to kill flash banners effectively. Adblock is a good solution, but it doesn’t stop sound from flash banners, which is pointless. So I turned to something called Flashblock, which blocks flash indiscriminately, allowing you to click on the flash elements you do want to view. This seemed like a good’un at first, but I soon realised that the plugin isn’t adaptable enough to live with.

So, the solution at this point, is that there isn’t one. I’ll just have to keep zapping the lil bastard until someone makes a viable Flash banner Killer.

In this day and age, there literally just aren’t enough hours in the day, and as most designers will know, sleep can be a demon loathed for its lack of flexibility. The student years taught us to tame the beast with overdoses of Pro-Plus and Redbull, but those methods are both costly and relatively ineffective in the long-haul. Now it seems the future is going to make pulling off an ‘all-nighter’ all the more easier.

According to this New Scientist article: Get Ready for 24-hour living, we can start popping pills like Modafinil, which will give the power of 8 hours sleep in half the time, without any side-effects, not even the shakes! But first you’ll have to feign Narcolepsy symptoms before your GP to get a prescription. The future, however, will be a different story. Why, even now, monkeys are being forced into pulling off monkey all-nighters, probably being pushed into the old Typewriter/Shakespeare theorem, to test new and improved drugs before they hit the shelves. Even the US army is running test-trials of the lively pills to combat their high friendly-fire/ITN reporter fatality ratios.

Of course, once you have your Modafinil prescription and all the free time you need to catch up on work, you might find there isn’t enough daytime to satisfy your waking binge. The Solution: Stretch time by flying. Or you could just move to Alaska for the summer months.
